4 Tips for Happiness

Happiness is a choice

Happiness does not happen to us, we have to choose it every day.  The choices we make each day determine how we experience our lives. We can live a life fixated on to-do lists, caught up with judgements and worries, or we can re-wire our minds to experience greater happiness and joy by cultivating these four habits daily.

  1. Cultivate gratitude as a habit:

Happiness isn’t about getting what you want all the time. It’s about loving what you have and being grateful for it. Find joy in simple pleasures. Studies have shown that recording things we are grateful for in a gratitude journal greatly boosts our sense of well-being. Take a moment to record three things you are grateful for every day.

 

  1. Pause and savour the moment

Take a moment to open your senses:  Let something  wonderful  touch you.  “If we listen from the mind of silence, every birdsong and every whispering of the pine branches in the wind will speak to us” – Thich Nhat Hanh.  Resist the temptation to just register it and then rush on. Take time to savour the moment – let it make an imprint on your psyche.

 

  1. Gladden your mind

Seek out the people and things that inspire you and keep them close. Take time with good friends who rekindle your spark. Do things that anchor you and rejuvenate your spirit –  listening to music, gardening, singing, creating something with your hands – whatever it is.

 

  1. Be Kind

Do one small kindness each day. It can be a little gesture like an unexpected smile, an encouraging  word, or gesture of help.  A generous heart and kind words are the things that renew our humanity. It is in the small gestures that our strength lies.

 

We can change a lifetime of habits through journal writing and having a special journal is a treasure.
